At home tooth whitening is a great convenience to people who don't have a lot of time to spend going to the dentist and who are also on a low budget. Home teeth whitening kits can be found for a low price, and still be quality products.
These kits can be found in the form of strips, trays and brush applicators. Whitening strips have a gel on them and are placed on the front of the teeth to whiten them. Whitening trays are filled with a gel and kept in the mouth for a few hours a day, sometimes overnight. Brush applicators are dipped into a bleaching gel and then brushed onto the teeth. These products work through oxidizing agents, like peroxide, that help remove discoloration on the enamel of teeth, and other ingredients that help break down the substance that causes yellowing of the teeth.
These products lighten discoloration in much the same way as whitening treatment at the dentist would, but with a lower concentration of peroxide. It is an inexpensive method, and many of these products do work as promised with regular application for a significant period of time.
Depending on the whitening product chosen, the whitening can take place over different periods of time. The first time you will usually see a difference is after two weeks, but some products do give results sooner than that. How long the teeth stays white depends on the user's oral hygiene and consistent use of the product. Most home teeth whitening kits require that they be placed on the teeth for at least half an hour each day.
